History

The Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages was established as one of the foundation departments in the Faculty of Arts in 1976.  The department houses four programmes: Linguistics, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. The Department was established on a sound academic footing by the foundation head of the department, Professor Oladele Awobuluyi, along with other distinguished professors and members of staff. Since then, the staff strength has variously grown and dropped to the present twenty-four lecturers.
